This piece features a hand-scrimshawed fireweed flower partially winding around a male walrus tusk tip. Each fine line was carefully etched by hand, bringing out the delicate detail of Alaska’s signature wildflower. The tusk tip measures approximately 9¼ inches long by 2 inches wide (not including its base) and sits atop a custom-made zebra wood base created specifically for this work. This artwork is signed and dated 2024 and includes the official Alutiiq Seal Tag, which identifies it as an original piece created by an Alutiiq artist.
Fireweed is found all across Alaska — in meadows, on slopes, and especially in places recently cleared by fire, thanks to its deep roots that survive heat and then burst into bloom. The tall stalks of pink-purple flowers begin blooming at the bottom and rise upward throughout the season. When they go to seed, the fluffy white tufts drift on the wind as a quiet signal that summer is drawing to a close.
